Homemade Pedas

The festivities, fasting and feasting is upon us. Despite the diversity in cultures, rituals and meals, the one thing that remains constant is our love for Indian sweets, which are prepared and offered as prasad and are later distributed among friends and family. One of our beloved festive favourites continues to be our homemade pedas.

These divine morsels which originated in Mathura, a sacred city from Uttar Pradesh and the birthplace of Lord Krishna, are hugely popular in India and are of various types. The most basic one is known as doodh peda, also known as milk peda. You will also find pedas made with besin and nuts, but the traditional age-old recipe uses only milk and sugar.

As the festive season is upon us, it also means we want to look our best! However, festivities and gorging on sweets go hand in hand. No reason to fret though! Here’s how you can enjoy your doodh peda and look fab this festive season, without having to give up on your favourite delicacies. Ingredients:

  1. 5 cups milk
  2. ¼ cup sugar (Use half the quantity with I’m lite– 2 tbsp)
  3. ¼ tsp cardamom powder

Steps:

  1. In a large kadai, add the milk.
  2. Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from sticking to the bottom and burning.
  3. Get the milk to a boil.
  4. Stir continuously, until the milk thickens in 8 minutes. Wait for 30 minutes until the milk attains a creamy texture.
  5. Keep stirring on low flame, to prevent the milk from burning. Wait for 50 minutes, until it attains a pasty texture.
  6. Add I’m lite and keep stirring until the I’m lite dissolves.
  7. Continue to cook on low flame until the mixture separates from the pan and holds shape.
  8. Add the cardamom powder and mix well.
  9. Cool slightly. Roll the mixture into balls and design using a mould.
  10. You can also decorate using a toothpick or fork & serve.
